Abstract

Arabic–Indonesian idiom translation requires decisions about conventional meaning, communicative function, register, and target-reader knowledge. This article develops a context-based instructional framework through a purposive narrative review and analysis of constructed teaching examples. The review draws on translation theory, recent research on Arabic idioms, and an Arabic–Indonesian study of novice translators. It separates translation methods, problem-solving strategies, and observable textual techniques to avoid treating a technique label as evidence of translation quality. The synthesis identifies five decision points: recognizing a potentially non-compositional expression, locating its meaning in context, establishing the translation purpose, comparing alternatives, and justifying the final choice. Illustrative sentences show why idioms, verb–preposition constructions, and ordinary lexical combinations should not be classified together without qualification. A digital translation portfolio is proposed to preserve the source context, alternative renderings, evidence consulted, and revision rationale. An initial rubric evaluates meaning, pragmatic function, Indonesian naturalness, and accountability of decisions. No student translations were collected and no frequency or effectiveness findings are reported. The framework is therefore a pedagogical proposal rather than a validated intervention. Further work should use authenticated source texts, independent translation assessment, and transfer tasks that distinguish improved decision-making from memorization of fixed equivalents.
