Abstract

This study explores the implementation of Extensive Reading (Qirā’ah Muwassa‘ah) in Arabic language education as a strategy to enhance reading fluency, vocabulary mastery, and learner motivation. Extensive Reading emphasizes reading large quantities of easy, interesting, and meaningful texts to develop natural language competence. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research investigates classroom practices, materials, and student responses at the Department of Arabic Literature, Universitas Negeri Malang. Data were collected through observation, document analysis, and interviews with teachers and students engaged in the Qirā’ah Muwassa‘ah program. The findings reveal that extensive reading significantly improves reading speed, comprehension, and lexical retention while fostering a positive attitude toward Arabic texts. Digital tools such as online graded readers, Padlet reading logs, and e-books further increased student engagement. However, challenges included limited Arabic graded materials, assessment adaptation, and students’ initial dependence on translation. The study concludes that integrating Qirā’ah Muwassa‘ah within the Arabic curriculum supports communicative and autonomous learning, aligning with 21st-century educational goals and the principles of lifelong literacy.
