Abstract

Abstract

The field of Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language (TAFL) has undergone profound transformations driven by the digital revolution and its modern tools, which have fundamentally reshaped pedagogical methods and learning dynamics. This shift has given rise to new modes of learning that rely on digital platforms, interactive applications, and artificial intelligence technologies. The present study explores the extent to which digital transformation has influenced teaching methodologies, curricular content, learning media, and the evolving roles of both teachers and learners.

Drawing on an extensive empirical investigation across diverse educational contexts—Arab (Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Egypt), European (France, Canada, Germany), and Asian (Turkey, China, Japan, Indonesia)—the research gains its analytical depth from the author’s direct experience teaching Chinese and Turkish students. This firsthand engagement enabled the observation of subtle linguistic, cognitive, and analytical differences, and provided insights into how technological, cultural, and pedagogical variables shape Arabic language acquisition.

Employing a mixed-methods approach that combines quantitative and qualitative tools—including a Likert-scale survey and structured as well as semi-structured interviews with teachers and students—the study revealed that Chinese learners exhibit remarkable linguistic fluency and critical analysis skills, despite digital access restrictions in their environment. This performance is attributed to an interplay of pedagogical, cultural, and technological factors. The selection of study sites was based on rigorous scientific criteria that ensure diversity in digital transformation levels and pedagogical approaches, reflecting both the breadth and analytical precision of the research.

Findings demonstrate that while digital transformation opens promising horizons for the global expansion of Arabic language education, it also faces persistent challenges, such as weak technological infrastructure, insufficient digital training for instructors, and inconsistent quality of online content. The study concludes that the integration of technology into Arabic teaching must be pedagogically grounded and strategically guided—not merely technically implemented—to ensure the quality, continuity, and sustainability of Arabic language education in the digital age.
