Abstract

Politeness in language plays a crucial role in maintaining the harmony of social relationships within speech. This study aims to analyze the use of politeness strategies in the youth novel حفرة الذئاب (The Wolves’ Pit), translated by Samir Darwish Ahmad, based on Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method with reading, note-taking, and classification techniques to identify utterances that contain elements of politeness. The collected data were then analyzed using the fifteen sub-strategies of politeness proposed by Brown and Levinson. The results show that the forms of politeness strategies found in the characters’ dialogues include negative face and positive face strategies. Negative face strategies are used by the characters to reduce imposition, express requests politely, and maintain the interlocutor’s freedom. Meanwhile, positive face strategies appear in utterances that express empathy, gratitude, attention, and a desire to build close social relationships.
